My List of Must-See Build 2011 Videos

Pete Brown - 16 September 2011

Windows 8 and Metro are new to most developers. Luckily, the //build/ event has a TON of great sessions explaining how to get productive with the new development stack. Here's my personal list of Build 2011 videos that XAML developers (Silverlight, WPF, Phone) should see, roughly in order starting with key Windows 8 sessions.

The video player supports trick play (on IE9, right-click and set the play speed), so after the first two sessions, play the rest at 1.4x to get the most out of them in the least amount of time.

In time for your weekend downtime and your flights home, here's my list of must-see sessions.

Day 1 Keynote with Steven Sinofsky

If you want the big overview of Windows 8 and Metro, this is the session to watch. This is probably one of the best keynotes I've seen.

8 Traits of Great Metro Style Apps with Jensen Harris

If you want to learn "Why Metro" or how the Windows 8 Metro UI works, watch this. Jensen does a great job making the design accessible to everyone while laying all the cards on the table. After watching this, if you want more designer-oriented information, check out Designing Metro style: principles and personalities.

    Pete,

I thought 8 Traits was great, surprised you didn't list Designing Metro style: principles and personality - it wasn't terribly technical but it went even deeper into defining what made an app Metro.
  2. Jim Wooleysays:
One of the best of the conference that you ommitted was Krzystof Cwalina's talk on .Net 4.5 explaning what parts of 4.5 they chose to include in the Metro subset and why. Really helpful for .Net devs considering migrating existing apps.
  3. Ozzsays:
    Thanks for these Pete!

I need some clarity! Silverlight Compatibility.

Will we be able to develop Silverlight apps for ALL Windows 8 devices? (Tablets, PCs, Phones, etc)
    **No Tablet? No Arm?

I have been told everything from Windows 8 Desktop Only Apps, to it runs on Everything..

    Thanks for the help.

    @Ozz

We haven't said anything officially one way or the other at this point. I suspect we'll hear more as Windows 8 progresses and we see some real examples of Win8 on Arm tablets.

And to be clear, I don't actually know the answer :)

    Pete
