Geek!

Pete Brown - 15 May 2007

I just won a close-to-mint condition APC ar2100blk 42u server rack on eBay. I need to pick it up in the next week or so from a person in Baltimore. I had been waiting some time now for a good black server rack with sides and doors to show up locally on eBay. Most of the good ones are out of Texas and California, and shipping 400 pounds up from there gets pretty expensive pretty quickly.

That will finally help reduce the mess in my utility/server room in the basement. I have to admit, though, it's pretty (and proudly <g>) geeky to own your own server rack. I currently have a rack-mountable switch, three servers in rack cases, one waiting to be put in a rack case, and plans for at least one more. I have one server turned off for the moment as I've reached the limit on power consumption for that circuit (spinning up four 15k SCSI drives really spikes, even when you step them). I'll probably run a new 30a circuit to service all the equipment.
