  • The Internet is Not a Democracy (or: how not to gain customer confidence)

Warning: this is as much a rant as anything remotely useful. Oh, and don't comment without reading the whole thing :) The Internet is not a democracy. More specifically, blog commenting systems aren't a democracy. Blog authors and administrators get to decide which comments show up on their blog, and which do not. On my own blog, I remove spam messages (or I let Akismet do it in most...

  • It’s a wrap! I’ve completed writing Silverlight 5 in Action

Well, I've completed the initial writing anyway. Anyone who has written a book understands the, umm, pleasure of the multiple editing cycles which shall follow. I have my normal development editor review Thursday afternoon, and then it's turned over for tech review the following week. Tom is really going to have his hands full with the 1191 pages this book came in at before editing and ...

  • Our Trip to Maker Faire 2011 NYC

This past weekend, I made a trip to NYC with my son, primarily to attend Maker Faire 2011 NYC. This was my first time at a real maker faire, and my first time at the Hall of Science in New York City. The Maker Faire is a family-friendly event. IMHO, that means school-age, as the under 5 set will get bored and tired fairly quickly. The Maker Faire covered the gamut of things th...

  • Silverlight 3 – Perspective 3d Transforms – PlaneProjection

One of the most commonly requested features for Silverlight is some sort of 3d support. Within that, what many folks have expressed real interest in is the ability to do a perspective / non-affine transform of objects in space. Well, the Silverlight team delivered on that one for sure. Not only do we have the perspective transform (which could have been accomplished using shaders or the new bit...

  • Microsoft Buys Caligari

The first real 3d modeling tool I used was one of the earlier Windows versions of trueSpace. While I was never impressed with the rendering engine back then (it has improved over the years) I really cut my teeth on modeling using that tool. The workspace was somewhat unique as far as modeling tools goes, encouraging a more immersive 3d editing experience vs. the usual 3-view approach.  Cal...

  • Windows Live Writer

I finally decided to take a pop at using Windows Live Writer to write for my blog. While Community Server has a reasonable editor, it is an online in-browser editing experience and can suffer from the usual shortcomings that architecture has. Creating thumbnails and uploading images was definitely a chore, and Live Writer takes care of all that junk for me. Below is a random photo from my file...

  • Silverlight Kit3d

I'm always amazed at what people can create with the most minimal of tools. In this case, a 3d library for Silverlight 1.0, written all in javascript. The animation looks pretty smooth too.Check it out Kit3d at Mark Dawson's site.

  • Cool Demo

Every once in a while I check back in with the demo scene. I always enjoyed the cracktros on the commodore 64, and later the cool demos by Future Crew and others in DOS.This is a pretty new demo, and it is very cool, especially when you consider the tiny size of the exe.Check it out. fr-041: debrisMy old p4 with the GeForce FX would only run at 800x600 with decent speed. A newer box w...
